Ross hails from an incredibly musical family in the Shetland Islands. He started to play the fiddle at the age of 8 in school but his musical interest had been ignited long before then.
In the Anderson High School in Lerwick he received lessons from his mother, a renowned fiddle teacher, Margaret Scollay.
After Shetland he studied at Plockton Centre of Excellence for Traditional Music, the first Shetlander to do so. From there he went on to obtain a degree in Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University.
Through this time he played with many different groups including award winning band ‘Bodega’. With Bodega he toured all over Europe and in America where he met ‘Peatbog Faeries’ at Milwaukee Irish Festival. Following some impromptu sessions on the rooftop bar of the hotel he was asked to start doing depping work with the band.
Now playing with the band full time and in a duo with guitar and flute extraordinaire Tom Oakes, Ross is always respectful of his native Shetland style and continues to look for new ways of playing exciting fiddle music in whatever guise you find him in.[Peter Morrison] [Tom Salter] [Greame Stafford] [Innes Hutton] [Stu Haikney]
